National Heroes Day 2012

By virtue of Act No. 3827, the nation will celebrate the National Heroes Day every last Sunday of August 2012 to commemorate the known and unknown heroes of the Philippine Revolution, during the Philippine-American War and World War II. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in cooperation and in coordination with other government agencies and non-government organizations/associations, will lead the undertaking of various historical and cultural activities to observe this event.
This significant occasion in Philippine history will be highlighted by the Wreath-Laying Ceremonies to be held at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LNMB), Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on August 27, 2012, 8:00 a.m. The Wreath-Laying Ceremonies will also be replicated in different cities and municipalities nationwide to be spearheaded by the local government units (LGUs).

In support of the celebration, the Department of Education (DepEd) will join in the commemoration program and activities at LNMB. The DepEd National Capital Region (NCR)-Division of Taguig-Pateros shall be the lead division.

To make this year's celebration more meaningful, all public and private schools are encouraged to carry out activities integrated in related subject areas such as Sibika at Kultura, Hekasi, Araling Panlipunan, Values Education, Music, Arts, Physics Education and Health (MAPEH), Filipino and English during the classroom discussions to highlight the courage and patriotism of these national heroes.

Likewise, from August 20 to 24, the teachers may conduct classroom essay writing, drawing, storytelling, debate and oratorical contests on the values, heroism, nationalism, patriotism and love of country which were exhibited by the heroes during the trying periods of this country. To end the week, the Social Studies Department may spearhead the conduct of a simple campus program to be participated in by the students.

School heads together with the Social Studies Department heads are requested to submit a report/documentation on the activities undertaken by the schools in relation with the celebration addressed to Assistant Secretary Elena R. Ruiz, Assistant Secretary for Programs and Projects, DepEd Complex, Meralco Avenue, Pasig City (Attention.: Ms. Luzviminda F. Dela Rosa, Project Development Officer (PDO) III, Special Programs and Projects Office (SPAPO), copy furnished the regional directors (RDs) and schools division/city superintendents (SDSs).
