The Department of Education (DepEd) through the Bureau of Elementary Education-Special Education Division (BEE-SPED) will spearhead the celebration of the 34th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week with the theme "Mainstreaming Persons with Disabilities in Economic Development" on July 17-23, 2012. The theme promotes the full employment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through cooperative support of human rights-based initiatives.
The objectives of this year's celebration are to:
- stimulate public awareness on disability issues and concerns which will strengthen the involvement of the government and non-government organizations (NGOs) including cause-oriented groups, civil society, self-help groups of persons with disabilities, the academe, professional groups and societies, local government units (LGUs), business sector, the media and other entities of the society;
- serve as the vehicle of information for programs being implemented by government agencies and organizations of and for PWDs which adhere to the promotion of the inherent rights of PWDs;
- encourage every Filipino citizen to take active responsibility in the upliftment of the economic and social conditions of PWDs in the society, thereby encouraging them to take pro-active roles in nation building;
- generate full media support on the celebration and other disability-related issues and concerns which affect PWDs and their families; and
- develop and strengthen cooperation and partnership between and among the various sectors of the Philippine society for better understanding of disability issues and concerns.
As a member agency of the Governing Board, the DepEd must support the conduct of the following activities geared towards a successful celebration:
- Thanksgiving Mass;
- Employer's Forum on Building Partnership Towards Economic Development
- Exhibit of Livelihood Products of PWDs
- Mobility Clinic and Medical Mission
- Jobs Fair
- Registration of PWDs
- Entrepreneurship Appreciation Seminar
- Sports Activities
- Newborn Screening
The proposed activities can be conducted at the school and/or division levels. Hence, Special Education (SPED) Centers and public or private schools with SPED programs are encouraged to undertake activities relevant to the theme of this year's celebration considering the policies on the least class disruptions and the least expenses.
On the celebration of the 34th NDPR Week, all SPED centers and schools with SPED programs must accomplish the enclosed Agency Feedback Report Form to be submitted to the Special Education Division-Bureau of Elementary Education (SPED-BEE), 2nd Floor Bonifacio Building, Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.
