National Intellectual Disability Week 2013

The Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with other government and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) will celebrate the 2013 National Intellectual Disability Week on February 14-20, 2013 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1385 entitled Designating the Period from February 14-20, 1975, and Every Year Thereafter as Retarded Children's Week. This year's theme is Towards Dignity and Quality of Life or Tungo sa Marangal at Makabuluhang Pamumuhay.
The Department of Education (DepEd) encourages all schools especially those with Special Education (SPED) programs to conduct any of the following suggested school-based activities during the week:
  1. inviting the public to visit schools and classes or other educational service providers for children and youth with intellectual disability;
  2. conducting advocacy campaign in radio and television shows featuring children and youth with intellectual disability as self-advocates to speak about their success;
  3. conducting dialogues with parents, service providers and stakeholders focused on the theme of the celebration;
  4. discussing best practices and systems of approach to better improve inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities in the classrooms, school and community during teachers' and parents' meeting in regular classes or school program;
  5. holding cultural shows, sportsfests, photo and work exhibits and other activities which will feature the success stories and showcase the potential capabilities of children and youth with intellectual disabilities; and
  6. organizing Camp Pag-ibig, an annual day camp for children and youth with special needs, which started in 1976 and conducted to highlight the celebration of the National Mental Retardation Week.
At the National Capital Region (NCR), the Quezon City Government (QCG) in coordination with the Special Education (SPED) Division-Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) of the DepEd, Philippine Association for the Retarded (PAR), Jaycees Capitol, Inc. (JCI)-Quezon City, Manila Water (MW) and the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage System (MWSS) wi11 sponsor the Annual Camp Pag-ibig at the Balara Filter Plant, Quezon City on February 16-17, 2013. Children enrolled in special classes including teachers, administrators and supervisors are encouraged to join the activity. Other regions such as Regions I, III, VI and XI will hold the same activity in their respective localities.

All activities to be undertaken should not disrupt regular classes nor compromise their supervision pursuant to DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2005 entitled Instituting Measures to Increase Engaged Time-on-Task and Ensuring Compliance Therewith. Activities which are community-based should be conducted during Saturday and Sunday of the week.

2012 National Intellectual Disability Week


The Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with other government and non-government organizations (NGOs) will celebrate the 2012 National Intellectual Disability Week on February 13-19, 2012 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1385 entitled, "National Mental Retardation Week." The celebration is also part of the observance of the Philippine Decade of Persons with Disabilities (2003-2012) as outlined in Presidential Proclamation No. 240. This year's theme is "Developing Survival Skills Among Children with Intellectual Disabilities."

This Department encourages all schools especially those with Special Education (SPED) programs to conduct any of the following suggested school/division/region¬based activities to support the week-long celebration:
  1. institutionalizing day camp activities for children with intellectual disability for the development of skills towards survival and coping mechanisms of the present times;
  2. conducting advocacy campaign in radio, television and print media featuring children and youth with intellectual disability as child advocates;
  3. conducting dialogues with parents, service providers and stakeholders relevant to the theme of the celebration;
  4. conducting regional/division-wide trainings/conferences for parents, school administrators and other government and non-government service providers to improve and enhance the quality of existing collaboration; and
  5. holding cultural shows, sportsfest, photo and work exhibits, film showing featuring the latest educational interventions and other activities which will showcase the potential capabilities of children and youth with intellectual disabilities.
