PO1 Randy Christian A. Martires, at around 11:30 in the morning on Friday, boarded AC Bus Liner at Camp Crame, Santolan, Quezon City going home after his duty, but upon reaching Trinoma Mall, in Quezon City, three (3) suspects armed with a caliber 38 revolver and bladed weapons, announced a robbery / hold-up and immediately divested cash and belongings of the passengers.
Unknown to the suspects, PO1 Martires was seated in the middle of the bus, grabbed his service firearms and told the suspects to surrender. One of the suspects attacked and stabbed the off-duty police, prompting him to shot the suspect, wounding the right side of his body and was brought to the nearby Quezon City General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival (DOA) by attending physician. The suspect was later identified as Nelson Laconsa.
Two of Laconsa’s companions immediately jump-off the bus to elude arrest, carting away money, cellular phones and personal belongings of the bus passengers.
For his act of conspicuous courage and gallantry in action even beyond the call of duty, PO1 Randy Christian Martires was given a "special promotion” by no less than PNP Chief PDG Raul M Bacalzo, on April 4, 2011 during the NHQ PNP Monday Flag Raising Ceremony.
Bacalzo said, "the courage displayed by PO1 Martires earned himself not only the admiration of the members of the PNP but also the people he had sworn to serve.”
The PNP Chief also urged all PNP personnel to follow the bravery and heroism showed by PO1 Martires, who saved the bus passengers even during off-duty.
