Others might be confused which is the biggest. Isn't it OCTAGON claims to be the biggest and largest computer store in the Philippines according to their "About Us" article posted in OCTAGON website (octagon.com.ph)? In addition, OCTAGON is one of the oldest computer stores in the Philippines which was established on 1982. Thus, they penetrated the market well.
For the previous years, OCTAGON was indeed the biggest. But when CD-R King entered the computer retailing arena in 2006, they greatly caught the attention of computer and IT consumers. Due to the super-low price of the items sold by CD-R King, their consumer base grew so quickly. Their first branch in Glorietta created an instant success that they added one more branch after a few months. During the first months of business operation, majority of what they sell were blank CD's and accessories. Today, they now have more than hundreds of product lines (from ballpen to computers and printer accessories). Name the computer accessory you want, they have it!
In the span of 5 years, CD-R King has reached to over a hundred branches overtaking the number of OCTAGON branches. CD-R King has 198 branches all over the Philippines according to the list of branches in CD-R King website, cdrking.com. Some are soon to open and I'm sure they will quickly penetrate in some populated areas in the Philippines.
In my analysis, let me enumerate to you some strengths that CD-R King posses that makes them the "Biggest" or shall we say the "King" in computer accessories retailing industry:
- Very low-price items. Although some of the products are highly competitive in prices but most of them are cheaper than other computer stores. Based on my personal experience, CD-R King is by far the most affordable computer store in the Philippines. I tried to buy some computer accessories and compare prices in almost all computer stores here in Cebu (major computer stores such as; OCTAGON, PC Express, Thinking Tools, NGenius, HP, Accent Micro, Electroworld, NEO, Nutech Marketing, XComp, CBX, and other Chinese computer stores in Colon and Magallanes).
- Majority of the products are very handy and profitable. Who knows that the 500 peso USB drive you bought from CD-R King is only 100 peso as original price without profit margin.
- Have almost all computer accessories being sold. For average computer users and consumers, you can find all you want in CD-R King.
- Continue to add product lines that have no or low competition. You can see those CD-R King products such as USB-powered light bulb, Do-it-yourself Canvass Photo Frame and Fan. They are the first to introduce affordable Blue-ray Blank Disc and Blue Ray DVD Writer for computers. And hey, you might be surprised. CD-R King is also selling beauty products such as Heated Eyelash Curler, Electric Nose/Ear hair trimmer, LED lighted Tweezer, Electric Eyebrow Trimmer and many others.
- Low Employee Salary. I've heard one of their staff that their monthly salary ranges from 8,000 to 11,000. CD-R King saves more money.
- Strict and Goal-driven Management. I think CDR-King owner and the management has this strong will and drive to pursue their business goals. Within just a few years, over a hundred of branches are established.
- Powered by a smart marketing strategy. Divide and conquer. CD-R King doesn't franchise but they do implement division of small authorities to do their jobs per area.
- CD-R King Branding. Every time you buy, you have in your mind the name CD-R King. This name is printed in their product boxes, covers, labels, and in their plastic bags. CD-R King didn't actually manufacture those products. They are just in the game of distribution. When a Pinoy thinks that the product has a brand, it's good or better.
