The Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy (PCCED) and the
University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) and supported by the
Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation (SPCC) will hold a conference
entitled " Understanding Jose Rizal and His Civic Designs" on November
18-19 at the UA&P Campus, Pasig City. This is in line with Dr. Jose
Rizal's 150th birth year celebration.
The conference aims to: - strengthen civic education by revisiting the content of Rizal course taught at the secondary and higher education levels;
- walk the participants through selected primary and translated text as a starting point for discussing Rizal's key ideas on nation-building; and
- help the teacher-participants reflect on Rizal's work as a means of including civic virtues to young Filipino students.
The differences in Jose Rizal's analysis of Philippine society are conveyed in his two masterpieces, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, both published in Spain, will be highlighted in one of the sessions in the conference. This will also encourage the participants to see the historical development and dynamism of Rizal's thought and will further point out how Rizal came under specific ideological influences and how he transcended such influences as his political ideas matured. The participants to this conference are teachers of the Rizal course in the secondary education and higher education levels, both public and private schools to deepen their analyses of Rizal's selected works which are often unread. The registration fee is Two Thousand Five Hundred Pesos (PhP2,500.00} each of private school participants and One Thousand Pesos (PhP1,000.00) each of public school participants to cover meals, conference manuals and certificates of participation.
