Why won't my 2002 Ford Taurus transmission shift into any gears?

Why won't my 2002 Ford Taurus transmission shift into any gears? This problem got worse and worse. It started out with sometimes jerking when shifting into 1st or 2nd. Now, it won't shift into any gear except neutral, no reverse, not first, nothing. Had a friend take a look see, he checked the transmission fluid and claimed there is too much fluid and if we let it sit for a while it might work better. Sure enough, we let the engine sit and warm up and it was able to shift into reverse and 1st -- but it still wasn't pretty.

"Verify the transmission fluid is clear red and does not smell burnt. Check your service records to see if the service identified below had been performed <= 30 k miles.

This condition may still be corrected by replacing the transmission fluid and filter.

Like oldturkey said … check your codes. Maybe a P0741.
