My in-door ice maker keeps dispensing

My in-door ice maker keeps dispensing My Kenmore Elite french door refrigerator will not stop dispensing ice or water long after I release the lever. I have tried to clean it with appliance cleaner but am still having the same issue. I cannot get it to stop unless I time it or open the door. My warranty is expired and don’t want to pay the high cost of appliance repair. What can I do to resolve this issue?
