brake lights dont stay on

brake lights dont stay on i have a 98 chevy k1500 and the brake lights go on when i tap the brake pedal but as soon as i press on the pedal hard the brake lights turn off. My brake light on the dash comes on sometimes and i also have a spongy pedal
