Camera on, screen blank, lens cover stays open-What to do?

Camera on, screen blank, lens cover stays open-What to do?

Used the camera at the beach yesterday, and initially worked fine. Lens cover quite retracting, and I can't find anything stuck in it. The camera will turn on with a blank screen for 2-3 seconds, then turn off. I can review the pictures on the card, but nothing else. This is messing with my vacation big time, and any suggestions will be welcomed. I replaced the battery with a newly charged one, but didn't make any difference. I don't have any tools with me, but if needed, there is a Lowe's not too far away & I'm sure I should be able to find what I need. THANKS!!

"I had same issue with similar Olympus 720. You might try soaking it for a while first, but I just removed the front face plate. There was accumulated gunk holding the lens cover. Gently wiped it all clean and presto! all good. You are not opening the camera, just removing the front face to clean around the lens cover so it can slide.

I don't know if the 725 is different, but on the 720, there are three small allen screws on the front and a small phillips screw on the edge. You will need a very small (1.5mm) metric allen wrench (found in common allen wrench sets), and a very small screwdriver for the little screw on the side (found in common micro screwdriver sets). Keep track of which hole each allen set screw came from, they are all different, in fact one appears to be just decoration and has no threads, I just secured it with a tiny dab of all purpose adhesive (Ace hardware brand). Check the tab near the lens goes back in place. Dr. John Christensen

Update

P.S. 720 looks exactly the same as the 725 so above should be worth a try.JGC"

"had similar issues with 2 kodak cameras, one with sand one without, could make lens manually retract when out of camera. problem was with cable controlling lens. purchased a used lens from ebay for approx $20.

sometimes there is no dirt to be seen, it's moved elsewhere after the damage is done.

i think if you can find the lens for a good price then it's worth a bash."

"Try to do a reset by removing your batteries & leave it for 12 to 24 hrs.

If not, it could be the support (firmware) & might need to flash back."
