The Project aims to develop teaching-learning materials which promote cultural awareness and appreciation, in line with the shared goal of education for inter-cultural understanding. Specifically, it aims to:
- develop learner-friendly picture cards based on the collected folktales from Southeast Asia and Korea;
- create a website to archive all the developed materials;
- assist teachers to increase the level of language and cultural literacy of children in primary education in Southeast Asian countries and Korea; and
- strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation between Southeast Asian countries and Korea through common educational materials.
The project has resulted in the production of a teachers’ guide, a DVD and guide for storytelling, and a story picture card package which can be used for story-telling sessions. These materials contain widely read folktales of 11 Southeast Asian countries and Korea.
The copy of Telling Tales from Southeast Asia and Korea: Story Picture Cards, can be found at the Learning Resource Management and Development System (LRMDS) website. The teachers’ guide and the DVD of story telling are downloadable from the following website addresses: http://asianfolktales.unescoapceiu.org; http://www.seameo.org; and http://www.seameo-spafa.org.
