It is a constellation in the northern sky. It came from the Latin word which means hunting dogs.
It was first included by Ptolemy in Ursa Major as informes (unformed stars). It was eventually created by Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in 1687.It is the 38th largest constellation in the night sky, occupying an area of 465 square degrees. It can be found in NQ3, the third quadrant in the northern hemisphere.
The constellation houses the famous stars Cor Caroli and La Superba; the Whirlpool Galaxy, Sunflower Galaxy, Cat’s Eye Galaxy and Messier 106, the globular cluster Messier 3, the Whale Galaxy, the Hockey Stick Galaxies, and the Cocoon Galaxy.
Canes Venatici belongs to the Ursa Major family, along with Boötes, Camelopardalis, Coma Berenices, Corona Borealis, Draco, Leo Minor, Lynx, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor.
It was identified with two dogs that were held on a leash by the Herdsman Boötes.
