Minimum height requirement
"My brother has always wanted to become a police officer or a uniformed firefighter. He is planning to take a college course aligned with this goal of his. But his concern is that he is not very tall for a guy at 5'3"". He has been told by one of his high school teachers that there is a certain height requirement but he is not sure what the current regulation on this is. Can you please enlighten us? My brother is very diligent and I know how passionate he is to be part of the men in service.Bunny
Dear Bunny,Republic Act (RA) 11549, otherwise known as the ""PNP, BFP, BJMP and BuCor Height Equity Act,"" which was approved on May 26, 2021, provides the minimum height requirement for aspiring members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
For those aspiring to become police officers or uniformed firefighters like your brother, it will be well to take note that RA 11549 unequivocally states:""Section 2. Section 30 of Republic Act 6975, as amended, is further amended to read as follows:
""Section 30. General Qualifications for Appointment. - No person shall be appointed as officer or member of the PNP unless he or she possesses the following minimum qualifications:x x x
""(h) Must be at least one meter and fifty-seven centimeters (1.57 m) in height for males and one meter and fifty-two centimeters (1.52 m) for females: Provided, that a waiver for height requirement shall be automatically granted to applicants belonging to the cultural communities/Indigenous Peoples x x xSection 3. Section 4 of Republic Act 9263 is amended to read as follows:""""Section 4. Professionalization and Upgrading of Qualification Standards in the Appointment of Uniformed Personnel to the BFP and the BJMP. - No person shall be appointed as uniformed personnel of the BFP and the BJMP unless he/she possesses the following minimum qualifications x x x""(h) Must be at least one meter and fifty-seven centimeters (1.57 m) in height for males and one meter and fifty-two centimeters (1.52 m) for females: Provided, that a waiver for height and age requirements shall be automatically granted to applicants belonging to the cultural communities/Indigenous Peoples and x x x"" (Emphasis supplied)
Given that your brother's height is above the minimum height requirement mentioned under the foregoing law, then he may still pursue his goal of becoming a police officer or a uniformed firefighter provided, of course, that apart from such height requirement, he complies with the other mandated qualifications for such appointment. We hope that we were able to answer your queries.
