Restriction of automatic residency
This injunction is subject to time limits for debtors who have had one or more bankruptcies dismissed. Those with one case in the previous year are granted a 30-day stay. Those with more than two cases are not granted a respite.
Multiple garnishments of wages. Filing for bankruptcy stops wage garnishments initiated by creditors. This may be one of the only methods for individuals with multiple judgments against them to potentially discharge the debt. The following are additional actions that are halted by an automatic stay:
Eviction. If you are behind on your rent and are being evicted from your residence, you may be able to postpone the eviction for several days or even weeks. It should be noted that the new bankruptcy law makes it easier to evict tenants, so there is still a high chance that eviction will occur, but it can be postponed to allow the tenant to find a new place to live.
Disconnection on utilities. If you are in danger of having your water, electricity, gas, or telephone service disconnected by your utility company, you can purchase approximately 20 days.
Foreclosure. Automatic stay halts foreclosure temporarily, so if your lender is foreclosing on your home, this may be a solution to buy you time to plan an exit.""
