Two years ago, ABS-CBN Foundation managing director and Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission chairperson Gina Lopez led a multi-sector project for the cleanup and rehabilitation of the ailing Pasig River. Part of the project was the installation of Active Island ReactorsTM, a technology created by Biomatrix Water, that will increase the amount of oxygen in the water.
During a contract signing at the Casa Roces in San Miguel District, Manila, executives of the liquor company led by Tanduay Holdings Inc. President Michael Tan and Managing Director and Deputy CEO Wilson Young have formalized Tanduay's commitment to donate P2,500,000 for the installation of two reactors on the historic Estero de San Miguel. Ms. Gina Lopez represented the ABS-CBN Foundation in the signing event.
The Estero de San Miguel is nearest to Tanduay's plant in Quiapo, Manila. For years now, Tanduay has been helping the community maintain the cleanliness of the estero. However, the company recognizes the need for modern equipment to restore the river back to its original state.
The first Active Island ReactorsTM were installed in the section of the waterway between Pedro Gil and 13 De Agosto along the side of the new Paco Market.
Tanduay Distillers Inc. is active in advocating environment conservation. In its facilities, for instance, it employs a sophisticated wastewater management process that is recognized for complying with international standards for green practices. The KBPIP project further underscores Tanduay's commitment in environment conservation.
The KBPIP project plans to cover the rest of the other esteros behind the Malacanang Palace, which include Estero de Aviles, Estero de Uli-Uli, Estero de Quiapo, Estero de San Sebastian in 2012-2013; Quezon City tributaries and the San Juan River in 2013-2015; and finally, the Pasig River on 2015-2016.
