Ice maker fan only works intermittently.

Ice maker fan only works intermittently. I have an LG LMXS30776S with the in door ice maker. Sometimes the ice maker works fine and you can hear the ice maker fan running. But intermittently the ice maker fan will stop working and the control panel will show error code IF. According to the LG support page this is the ice maker fan code. What would cause the code and issue to only present some of the time?
