Intermittant power up using computer / car adapter

Intermittant power up using computer / car adapter

Ever since i've had this gps (3 or so years) it would occasionally not power up using the computer cord or the auto adapter.. I've never liked the male / female cord hook up and I suspect my problem is tight there. Can I test this without investing a ton of money for a fix?
