How to synchronize motors on Invacare wheelchair

How to synchronize motors on Invacare wheelchair

I am repairing an invacare TDX SP wheelchair for a friend. There are 2 D.C. motors that operate the wheels. The motors have index marks suggesting they are to be adjusted by twisting to a certain degree position. How and why do I need to make this adjustment?
