Getting pictures from internal storage

A friend gave me their v9x to see if I can get some sentimental pictures from it after their husband almost ripped it in half. I bought a battery and the phone powers on. However the screen does not turn on, and therfore I cannot see how to get to the settings to manage cable connections.
