Regional Training Program on Sign Language and Seminars on Special Education (SPED)

The Department of Education (DepEd) through the Special Education (SPED) Division, Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) in coordination with the LINK Center for the Deaf, and in partnership with the Boeing Global Corporate Citizenship will conduct the Regional Training Program on Sign Language and Seminars on Special Education (SPED) which has two (2)-phases: 1st Phase and 2nd Phase on the following dates and venues:

The training program aims to:
  1. upgrade the teachers' competency in teaching elementary pupils who are deaf and hard of hearing;
  2. train the teachers in sign language as preparation for the inclusion of pupils with hearing impairment in the general education;
  3. provide teachers with competencies in establishing and maintaining SPED programs; and
  4. provide equal educational opportunities for development to children and youth with special needs to lead a more fulfilled lives.
This program is composed of Sign Language Training and Seminars in Special Education as well as formal Sign Language Evaluation in the Basic and Intermediate Levels by the Philippine Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (PRID).

The following are the only expected participants to this training:
  1. Teachers who attended the 1st Phase Training and who are going to participate in the 2nd Phase. Please see the list contained in Enclosure No. 1; and
  2. The new batch composed of fifteen (15) regular public school teachers regionwide to attend the 1st Phase of this training.
The new batch of trainees must have identified the deaf school-aged children to be enrolled for School Year 2012-2013 (Enclosure No. 2).

The teachers who are presently handling deaf children in special education or integration classes, and those teachers who had attended the trainings provided by LINK Center for the deaf are excluded from attending this training.

The meals for the participants, travel and honoraria of consultants, seminar kits and Sign Language Manuals will be provided by the LINK Center for the Deaf. The lodging and travel expenses of participants will be provided by the regional offices (ROs) through the Division Local Funds or SPED Downloaded Funds for those SPED Centers with programs for children with hearing impairment.
